Richard was born in Tennessee on his grandfather’s farm. His family lived in Tennessee until he was 9 years old. In 1944 Richard's family moved to Mayfield, Kentucky to be near his other grandfather because his father had been drafted for WWII. Richard grew up in Mayfield and accepted the Lord at a very early age in the First Baptist Church. He met his wife Sarah when they were both in high school. She at another high school and cheerleading, and he playing basketball for Mayfield High. Richard and Sarah were married at the First Baptist Church in 1955. He graduated from Mayfield High and went to Paducah Junior College to play basketball and get his education started. He transferred to Murray State University, and graduated from there in 1961.

Richard and Sarah's son Keith was born in 1958 and upon graduation from college they came to California for their son’s health. A little girl Kim joined them in 1962. Richard has taught school and attended church in Wasco since 1961.
